Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was conferred the country's highest civilian award,Bharat Ratna ,at his residence on Friday.
President in a departure from protocol visited Vajpayee house to honour him with award in a simple ceremony as the latter is ailing and has been out of the public life.
The event included dignitaries like President, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Narendra Modi,former President A P J Abdul Kalam and Vajpayee's close relatives.
In his six decade long Political career Vajpayee was selected for the Lok Sabha 10 times and 2 times for the Rajya Sabha.
He was the Prime Minister of Country from 1998 to 2004 and is regarded as one of the best Politicians India has ever produced and is also one of the most respected Politician of country.
He took some bold steps during his term as Prime Minister as he started a historic bus service with Pakistan and signing a landmark Lahore Declaration with Nawaz Sharif with both sides pledging to push for peace and security.
Prime Minister Modi gave a speech praising Vajpayee and later tweeted that, " It is a historic moment for crores of Indian today with Atal Bihari Vajpayee is being given Bharat Ratna Award."
