While rushing through my newspaper earlier in the day something caught my attention.
It was a rather unusual headlines claiming that Nude models in Maharashtra will get a pay hike for their work. The first reaction was that do nude models really exist in India where people are just so much in their past that they are refusing to accept the changing world.
Then I checked the whole article curiously so that in the hope that all the questions which have suddenly shaken my mind will get an answer.
Slowly I came to know that the model referred to people who pose naked,semi-naked and draped for the students of fine arts who then sketch them on the canvas.
The whole article was concerned with the pay they get or their work. For instance before they were only paid 300 rs for posing nude for a relatively long period of time.
I wondered how can someone be so less paid even after posing nude.
But anything can happen in India where the oppressed people are generally tortured in many ways, but it seems that government has finally taken the problem seriously and has announced a three fold increase in their pay.
The Nude models who used to get paid Rs 300 for a complete day session will now get Rs 1000,while semi nude models will get paid Rs 600 instead of Rs 250 and those draped will get Rs 400.THE new rates will be applicable from the new academic session.
Fine arts students, who pursue courses in painting and applied arts, have sessions to draw life models as a part of their curriculum. Colleges had said the "meagre" rates were a hurdle in getting life models to pose for sessions.
Seriously posing nude for 6 hours and getting just 300 Rs was impractical. Even now the rates are not practical but with this hike the tough job will surely attract some jobless people.
