K Srikant Became The First Indian Male Shuttler To Win Swiss Open GP
Kidambi Srikant became the first Indian male shuttler to win the prestigious swiss open badminton tournament.He was knocked out of the All England last Wednesday in the very first round coming back after a hamstring injury.
Saina Nehwal has won this tournament twice in 2011 and 2012.
World No.4 Srikant defeated former champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the final to win the $120,000 Swiss Open GP Gold on Sunday.He defeated Viktor 21-15,12-21,21-14 to clinch his third International title in 21 months.
He won the first game rather easily,but got more defensive in the second allowing Viktor to take advantage and win the second game.
Third game belonged to him as he mostly dominated throughout it,he rattled the rhythm of the Viktor and won his first European title.
“I an extermely delighted to win the title here,” Srikant said after the victory.
His coach Pullela Gopichand was visibly happy with his performance and said “This is his first tile in Europe and I am happy for him.He needs to stay focused now as Olympic qualification year starts soon.He reads the game well and I am expecting more from him.”
