The country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna was conferred posthumously upon
educationist Madan Mohan Malviya at Rastrapati Bhavan today.
The award was received by Malviya’s family for his contribution in the country’s freedom
struggle and in the field of education.
The event took place in the Durbar Hall with dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
Vice President Hamid Ansari,Home Minister Rajnath Singh,Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
along with other cabinet ministers present.
Padma Awards were also distributed in the function with the prominent Padma Vibhushan
awardees being L K Advani and Prakash Singh Badal,
Last week president had awarded Bharat Ratna to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his
house in Delhi.
Malviya was born on December 25,1861 and was the president of Indian National Congress in 1909 and 1918.
He was behind the establishment of Banaras Hindu University.He is also remembered for
his role in Indian Independence movement.
